Summary

Overview: Rhode Island has passed an amendment to the state Fair Employment Practices Act which expanded the protections afforded to employees and job applicants on the basis of "conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions". The new law is effective immediately and includes employee notification requirements.

Coverage: All employers employing employees in Rhode Island.

1) "conspicuously posted at an employer's place of business in an area accessible to employees"; and

2) given by employers to: (a) all new employees upon commencement of employment; (b) all existing employees within 120 days of June 25, 2015 (October 23, 2015); and (c) any employee who notifies the employer of her pregnancy within ten days of such notification.
