Missouri Votes to Increase Minimum Wage

Missouri voters have approved Proposition A, which will increase the state’s minimum wage in phases.

Missouri requires domestic violence leave

Missouri has enacted legislation (House Bill 432) that requires employers with 20 or more employees to provide unpaid leave and reasonable safety accommodations to employees who are victims of domestic violence. House Bill 432 is effective immediately. 

Kansas City restricts pay history inquiries

Kansas City, Missouri has enacted an ordinance that will generally prohibit employers from asking applicants about their pay history. The ordinance takes effect October 31, 2019.

Voters in Michigan, Missouri, and Utah Approve Marijuana Laws on Election Day

Three states approved new marijuana laws on Election Day 2018. Voters approved medical marijuana laws in Missouri and Utah, while Michigan voters approved a recreational marijuana law.

Kansas City, Missouri, Enacts "Ban-the-Box-Plus" Ordinance

The Kansas City, Missouri, City Council recently passed restrictions on employers’ inquiries into, and use of, criminal record information. The ordinance becomes effective on June 9, 2018, and it applies to private employers with six or more employees.

Minimum Wage Update for Missouri and Minimum Salary Threshold Update for Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine and New York

In addition to the states identified in the December 14, 2017, Insights & Solution newsletter, Missouri will see an increase to its minimum wage come January 1, 2018. Alaska, California, Colorado, New York and Maine will also see increases to the minimum salary threshold for employee exemptions.  

Missouri Nullifies St. Louis and Kansas City Minimum Wage Ordinances

On August 28, 2017, Missouri House Bill (“HB”) 1194 will take effect and the (1) City of St. Louis’ minimum wage will decrease from $10.00 per hour to the state minimum wage of $7.70 per hour and (2) Kansas City's minimum wage, which was previously scheduled to increase from $7.70 to 8.50 per hour on September 18, 2017, will remain unchanged.

Missouri State Poster Updates

The  “EMPLOYERS EMPLOYING WORKERS UNDER THE AGE OF 16" section of the Missouri state poster has been updated. 

Worksite Employee Email: Missouri W-4 Form Revised

The Missouri Department of Revenue has issued a new "Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate" Form MO W-4 and is requiring that all Missouri employees complete a new form for the 2016 tax year.

An email will be sent to active worksite employees who are living or working in Missouri on April 22, 2016. 

Ban-the-Box Laws Limit Private Employers’ Criminal Background Inquiries

New ordinances in Columbia, Missouri, limit an employer’s ability to inquire into an applicant’s criminal history.
