Minnesota - Bloomington requires employers to provide sick leave

Bloomington, Minnesota has enacted an ordinance that will require employers in the city to provide sick leave to employees. Employers with five or more employees (regardless of location) must provide paid leave. Smaller employers must also provide leave, but it may be unpaid. The ordinance is effective July 1, 2023.

Minnesota requires employers to provide notice of frontline worker pay

Minnesota has enacted legislation (Senate File 2677) that requires employers of frontline workers to notify them that they may be eligible for a one-time payment from the state. The payments are meant to compensate these workers for responding to the extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minnesota OSHA suspends enforcement of vaccination and testing rule

Minnesota OSHA (MNOSHA) has announced that it will suspend enforcement of the state’s emergency temporary standard (ETS), which requires that employers with 100 or more employees ensure that employees either be vaccinated against COVID-19 or produce a weekly negative test.

Minnesota to increase minimum wage for 2022

Minnesota’s minimum wage will increase on January 1, 2022 as a result of an annual adjustment for inflation.

Large employers (defined as those with annual gross revenue of $500,000 or more) must pay non-exempt employees in Minnesota at least $10.33 per hour beginning January 1, 2022. The minimum wage for smaller employers will be $8.42 per hour.

Regardless of the size of the employer, a minimum wage of $8.42 per hour may be paid to workers under the age of 20 during their first 90 days of employment and to workers under the age of 18.

Minnesota has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 9) that will expand a requirement to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnancy. Senate Bill 9 takes effect January 1, 2022.

Duluth, Minnesota amends its paid sick leave ordinance

On July 19, 2021, Duluth Mayor Emily Larson signed File No. 21-23-0, which expands the reasons that leave may be used under Duluth’s Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) ordinance and expands on the notice requirement. The amendment to the ESST are effective Aug. 19, 2021.
