New Mexico has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 35) that will require employers to pay high school workers at least the minimum wage per hour.
Background:
Previously, New Mexico allowed employers to pay high school students (those who were regularly enrolled in secondary school and working after school or when school was not in session) at least $8.50 per hour.
Senate Bill 35:
Beginning June 18, 2021, Senate Bill 35 requires employers to pay high school workers at a rate that meets or exceeds the minimum wage (currently $10.50 per hour at the state level). Note: There are higher minimum wage rates in the City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, the City of Las Cruces, the City of Santa Fe, and Santa Fe County.
