U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has made minor changes to Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification). The revised Form I-9 has an edition date of Jan. 20, 2025, and an expiration date of May 31, 2027, and is now available for download.

Employers may use the updated version of the form (Jan. 20, 2025 edition date) or one of the following editions that remains valid until its respective expiration date:

  • Form I-9 (Aug. 1, 2023 edition) that is valid until May 31, 2027.
  • Form I-9 (Aug. 1, 2023 edition) that is valid until July 31, 2026  (Employers using this form must update their electronic systems with the May 31, 2027expiration date by July 31, 2026).

The Details

By way of background, the Form I-9 is used to verify a new hire's identity and work authorization. All employers must ensure that a Form I-9 is properly completed and retained for each employee at the time of hire. The expiration date of the form can be found in the upper right-hand corner of it.

The latest updates to the form include:

  • Renaming the fourth checkbox in Section 1 to “An alien authorized to work.”
  • Revising the descriptions of two List B documents in the Lists of Acceptable Documents.
  • Adding appropriate statutory language and a revised DHS Privacy Notice to the instructions.

E-Verify and E-Verify+ have been updated so that the Citizenship Status selection during case creation reflect this statutory language. The selection “A noncitizen authorized to work” will be updated to “An alien authorized to work.”

Next Steps

Review the official announcement from USCIS for complete details.
