The Details

The San Diego City Council passed an Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance (“Ordinance”) for the City of San Diego earlier this year. The Ordinance was planned to take effect in January 2015 and April 2015 for the minimum wage increase and earned sick leave requirements, respectively. For more information on the Ordinance, please click here.

On September 16, 2014, opposition to that Ordinance filed over 56,000 petition signatures to repeal the Ordinance, which were validated by the San Diego Registrar of Voters on October 16, 2014. Consequently, the Ordinance will not take effect in 2015 as provided.

On Monday, October 20, 2014, the San Diego City Council unanimously voted to put the Ordinance provisions to popular vote during the next San Diego election in June 2016. Accordingly, California State minimum wage and California State earned sick leave law, the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB 1522), will control in San Diego in 2015.
