Legislation to Reform California’ s Labor Code Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA)

Amendments to PAGA were recently negotiated in the form of two separate bills which were signed into law on July 1, 2024.  The amendments limit the claims that can be asserted and penalties that can be imposed in many PAGA lawsuits in the future.

California Approves Rules for Indoor Heat Illness Prevention

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has issued regulations that require employers to take certain steps to protect workers from heat illness if they have indoor workplaces where the temperature reaches 82° F. The regulations are effective immediately.

California Health Care Worker Minimum Wage Delayed Again

The minimum wage for health care workers in California has been delayed from July 1, 2024 to at least October 15, 2024. Originally, the minimum wage was supposed to take effect June 1, 2024, but it has now been delayed twice.

California OSHA Clarifies COVID-19 Rules That Are in Effect

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has clarified that the State Public Health Officer Order dated January 9, 2024 remains in place and continues to impact Cal/OSHA’s COVID-19 Prevention Non-Emergency Standards in particular with respect to isolation of COVID-19 cases.

California Minimum Wage Increase for Healthcare Workers Delayed to July 1, 2024

On May 31, 2024, the Governor of California signed into law (Senate Bill 828) which delays the implementation of California's health care worker minimum wage law by one month from June 1, 2024 to July 1, 2024. The original law required covered health care employees to be paid a minimum of between $18 and $23 per hour depending on the type of facility between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025.

California - Reminder: California Workplace Violence Prevention Requirements Take Effect Soon

California - Los Angeles County Enacts ‘Fair Chance’ Ordinance

California Issues Guidance on Fast Food Minimum Wage; New Legislation Expands Exemptions

The California Department of Industrial Relations has released guidance on a new law that entitles certain fast food restaurant workers to a minimum wage of $20 per hour beginning April 1, 2024. The state has also enacted legislation that expands the exemptions from the law effective immediately.
