New York increases minimum wage

New York's minimum wage will increase on December 31, 2019. This change is a result of a 2016 law that increased the minimum wage incrementally.

Pennsylvania enacts Construction Industry Employee Verification Act

Pennsylvania has enacted the Construction Industry Employee Verification Act (House Bill 1170), which requires construction industry employers to use E-Verify to confirm that new hires are authorized to work in the United States. House Bill 1170 takes effect onOctober 7, 2020. 

Ohio increases minimum wage for 2020

Ohio's minimum wage will increase to $8.70 per hour on January 1, 2020. With a few exceptions, all non-exempt employees in Ohio must be paid at least the minimum wage per hour.

New York expands protections for victims of domestic violence

New York has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 1040) that expands employment protections for domestic violence victims. Senate Bill 1040 takes effect on November 18, 2019.

New Hampshire expands anti-discrimination protections

New Hampshire has enacted legislation (House Bill 608) that expands gender identity protections. House Bill 608 is effective immediately.

Massachusetts Health Insurance Responsibility Disclosure (HIRD)

It is almost time for the HIRD filing. Each year, Massachusetts state law requires employers to file a HIRD form that contains information about employer-sponsored benefits offerings.

Maryland expands nondiscrimination law

Maryland has enacted legislation (House Bill 679) that expands the state's nondiscrimination law. House Bill 679 took effect on October 1, 2019.

Florida increases minimum wage for 2020

The minimum wage in Florida will increase to $8.56 per hour on January 1, 2020. All non-exempt employees in Florida must be paid at least the minimum wage.

California raises minimum pay requirements for certain exemptions

 The California Department of Industrial Relations has announced an increase to the pay rates computer software employees and physicians must receive in order to be exempt from overtime. Additionally, the minimum salary required for the administrative, professional, and executive overtime exemptions will also increase. These new rates take effect on January 1, 2020.

California expands organ donation leave requirements

California has enacted legislation (Assembly Bill 1223) that will expand the state's requirements for providing leave to employees for organ donation. Assembly Bill 1223 takes effect on January 1, 2020.
