The Virginia Human Rights Act prohibits an employer from discriminating against an individual on the basis of certain protected characteristics, such as race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, military status, or disability.

House Bill 1063 clarifies that religious protections include any outward expression of the individual’s faith, such as:
- Their adherence to religious dressing;
- Grooming practices; or
- Carrying or displaying religious items or symbols.
