California Provides Guidance on Expanded Sick Leave Law

The California Department of Industrial Relations has updated guidance to address the expansion of the state’s paid sick leave law that takes effect Jan. 1, 2024.

California Expands Year-End Notice Requirement

California has enacted legislation that significantly expands a requirement for employers to notify employees about federal and state earned income tax credits (EITCs). The changes are effective with notices furnished on or after Jan.  1, 2024.

California Amends Wage Theft Notice Requirements

California has enacted legislation that amends the notice requirements under the state’s Wage Theft Prevention Act, beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

Chicago Adopts New Paid Leave Ordinance

Chicago has enacted an ordinance that will require employers to provide both paid sick leave and paid leave that employees working in Chicago can use for any reason. The ordinance takes effect Dec. 31, 2023 and replaces an existing paid sick leave requirement in the city.

Boulder County, Colorado Enacts Minimum Wage

The Boulder County, Colorado, Board of County Commissioners adopted Ordinance 2023-4 ,which establishes a new local minimum wage starting Jan. 1, 2024.

Massachusetts HIRD deadlines are approaching

Washington 2024 Overtime Salary Threshold Announced

The Washington Department of Labor & Industries (WDOL) has announced  an increase to the state’s white collar overtime exemption salary threshold.   

IRS Announces 2024 Benefit Plan Contribution Limits

On Nov.  9, 2023, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced via Revenue Procedure 2023-34 the dollar limitation for 2024 on employee salary reductions for contributions to health flexible spending accounts; the monthly limitation regarding the aggregate fringe benefit exclusion amount for transportation in a commuter highway vehicle and any transit pass; and the maximum amount that can be excluded from an employee’s gross income for the amounts paid for qualified adoption expenses furnished pursuant to an adoption assistance program.

Ohio Enacts Recreational Marijuana Law

Voters in Ohio approved a ballot measure, An Act to Control and Regulate Adult Use of Cannabis (the Act), which legalizes recreational marijuana. The law takes effect on Dec. 7, 2023.

Montana Modifies Taxation of Tipped Income

Effective Jan. 1, 2024, tipped income will become taxable in the state of Montana.
