Under South Carolina law employers with handbooks wishing to preserve the "at-will" employment relationship and limit the possibility of an employee handbook being deemed an employment contract should have on the first page of the handbook (e.g. the cover page) a conspicuous disclaimer stating the employment relationship is at-will.
To this end we have updated and strengthened the cover page language of our model South Carolina handbook. The update may be accessed of FormSource under the New Hire section. Clients should consider reissuing the SC handbook with the new cover language.
