Nevada has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 327) that bans hairstyle discrimination in the workplace. Senate Bill 327 is effective immediately.

Background:

Under Nevada law, employers with 15 or more employees are prohibited from discriminating against applicants and employees on the basis of race, color and national origin, among other protected characteristics.

Senate Bill 327:

Senate Bill 327 amends Nevada law to also prohibit covered employers from discriminating against applicants and employees on the basis of traits associated with race, including hair texture and protective hairstyles. This includes, but is not limited to, natural hairstyles, afros, Bantu knots, curls, braids, locs and twists.

Compliance Recommendation:

Nevada employers should review their dress codes, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Senate Bill 327. Please contact your dedicated service professional with any questions.
