New Jersey Cities Pass Paid Sick Leave Legislation

The cities of Passaic, East Orange, Paterson, and Irvington recently passed their own paid sick leave ordinance that will provide the majority of private employees working in those cities with paid sick leave.

Massachusetts Requires Paid Sick Leave

Massachusetts voters approved a law that will require employers, under certain conditions, to provide sick leave to their employees. Employees may begin accruing sick leave under the law on July 1, 2015.

Oakland Passes Minimum Wage, Paid Sick Leave, Hospitality Service Charges Measure

Massachusetts Employers Must Provide Sexual Harassment Policy Annually

In Massachusetts, the law requires employers to adopt a written policy against sexual harassment. The employer's policy must include for example notice to employees that sexual harassment in the workplace is unlawful and that it is unlawful to retaliate against an employee for filing a complaint of sexual harassment. The policy should also assert the employer's commitment to investigate any complaint of sexual harassment.

New Jersey Employers Must Provide Annual CEPA Notice

Annual New Jersey Gender Inequity Notices must be Distributed

NJ law requires NJ employers with 50 or more employees (determined by counting all employees regardless of whether those employees work in New Jersey) to “conspicuously post” and distribute a notification stating employees’ rights to be free from gender inequity or bias in pay, compensation, benefits or other terms or conditions, under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Pay Act of 1963.

New York Wage Theft Prevention Act Annual Notice Requirement

The New York Wage Theft Prevention Act (“NYWTPA”) requires employers to provide employees with an annual notice regarding their compensation and other terms of employment. The notice must be provided to all employees between January 1 and February 1 of each year, regardless if they previously received a notice.  Although the state legislature has passed a bill repealing this requirement, as of the date of this publication, the bill has not been signed by the governor and therefore, the requirement remains in effect.
