New Jersey - Jersey City requires pay transparency

Jersey City, New Jersey, has passed an ordinance that calls for pay transparency and reinforces the state’s ban on salary history inquiries. The Ordinance is effective immediately.

New Jersey limits employer vehicle tracking

New Jersey has enacted legislation (Assembly Bill 3950), which requires an employer to notify its employees before using a vehicle tracking device. Assembly Bill 3950 takes effect on April 19, 2022.

New Jersey adds employment protections for recreational marijuana users

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has signed Assembly Bill 21, also known as the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance, and Marketplace Modernization Act, or "the Act." While the Act is effective immediately, the employment-related protections for recreational marijuana users do not become operative until initial rules and regulations are adopted.

New Jersey establishes COVID-19 safety standards

New Jersey has enacted Executive Order 192, which establishes specific health and safety measures for employers during COVID-19. Executive Order 192 takes effect November 5, 2020.

New Jersey adds protections for essential workers

New Jersey has enacted legislation (Senate Bill S2380) that adds benefit protections for essential workers. The law is retroactive to March 9, 2020, and extends for the duration of the public health emergency declared under Executive Order 103.

New Jersey further extends notification and pay requirements for mass layoffs

Following Senate Bill 2353, amendments to New Jersey's mini-WARN Act that were scheduled to take effect on July 19, 2020 will now take effect 90 days after the conclusion of the COVID-19 public health emergency as declared by the Governor's Executive Order 103 of 2020.

New Jersey further amends leave and disability laws

New Jersey has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 2374) that amends the state's Family Leave Act and the Temporary Disability Insurance program. Senate Bill 2374 takes effect immediately and is retroactive to March 25, 2020.

New Jersey enacts anti-retaliation protections due to COVID-19

New Jersey has enacted legislation (Assembly Bill 3848) to prohibit employers from retaliating against an employee for taking time off due to illness during the COVID-19 outbreak.
