As we previously reported, businesses with new or renewed federal contracts will have to pay their minimum wage workers $10.10 an hour. The rate increase will apply only to solicitations and contracts issued on or after January 1, 2015. 

As the fight in Congress and the court of public opinion continues with respect to the proposed legislation to raise the federal minimum wage supported by President Obama, the White House has announced broad proposed reforms to the Department of Labor (DOL) regulations defining the exemptions from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

With the economy on the upswing, employers find it increasingly necessary to attract and retain valuable employees. Not long ago, employees stayed in a job because of the health and life insurance benefits or the tight job market. 

A new District of Columbia law will require employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees affected by pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and related medical conditions and prohibit employers from requiring an employee to take leave if it is possible for the employee to continue working with reasonable accommodation. The law also requires employers to post and provide employees with a notice of rights. 

The District of Columbia Council has passed emergency and temporary amendments to the Wage Theft Prevention Amendment Act that, among other things, remove the requirements that employers keep time for exempt employees and that they pay exempt employees at least twice monthly.
