Oklahoma “Unity Bill” Clarifies Medical Marijuana Law, Includes Provisions Helpful To Employers

The Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act was signed into law by Oklahoma Governor Stitt on March 14, 2019.  The law clarifies certain regulatory aspects of the state’s existing medical marijuana law, and includes certain provisions that will be helpful to Oklahoma employers.

Oklahoma Voters Pass Broad Medical Marijuana Law with Anti-Discrimination Provisions

Oklahoma became the 30th state to pass a medical marijuana law after voters approved it on June 26, 2018. The law gives broad discretion to physicians in prescribing medical marijuana, which should make it fairly easy to obtain. Additionally, the law restricts employers from taking action against applicants or employees solely based on their status as a medical marijuana license holder or due to a positive drug test result.

The Oklahoma Discrimination in Employment section has been updated. There was no actual statute changes that prompted this poster update. The poster that was previously on the website was outdated and needed to be revised. The poster now includes more information regarding exempt employees, enforcement, penalties; employees' remedies and retaliation prohibited, and also more information on where to make your complaints.
