Vermont
Vermont’s Governor Phil Scott signed a recreational marijuana law on January 22, 2018. The law is the first recreational marijuana law to be enacted by a state legislature without a ballot initiative. It will take effect on July 1, 2018.

California
The California Supreme Court recently issued a decision significantly impacting how employers must calculate overtime pay when non-exempt employees receive a flat-sum bonus. The Court ruled that when calculating overtime during pay periods when an employee received a flat-sum bonus, employers must divide the bonus by the number of non-overtime hours actually worked.

Maine
A provision of Maine’s recreational marijuana law prohibits employers from testing for marijuana for pre-employment purposes and affects employers with employees who are subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations, as well as employers who are exempt from complying with Maine’s drug testing law.

The Kansas City, Missouri, City Council recently passed restrictions on employers’ inquiries into, and use of, criminal record information. The ordinance becomes effective on June 9, 2018, and it applies to private employers with six or more employees.
