Michigan enacts COVID-19 requirements and protections

Michigan has enacted legislation (House Bill 6032) that establishes certain requirements and protections related to COVID-19 for employees. House Bill 6032 is effective retroactive to March 1, 2020.

Michigan adopts emergency COVID-19 safety rules for employers

Michigan adds protections for employees impacted by COVID-19

Michigan Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, has issued an executive order that expands protections for certain workers impacted by COVID-19. The executive order is effective immediately and will continue until the end of the states of emergency and disaster.

Michigan Launches Paid Sick Leave Website

As previously reported, Michigan’s Paid Medical Leave Act went into effect on March 29, 2019.  Michigan has now launched a website regarding the new Paid Medical Leave Act.  Among other things, the website includes a frequently asked questions section and a mandatory model poster.

Minimum Wage Update for Michigan as Well as Certain Jurisdictions within California and New Mexico

Michigan and certain jurisdictions within California and New Mexico have just announced an increase in their minimum wage rates. If applicable, you must increase the pay rate for your non-exempt employees to meet the new minimum wage by no later than the effective date of the increase.

Michigan Announces Date of Minimum Wage Increase

On January 2, 2019, Michigan announced that the effective date of the minimum wage increase to $9.45 per hour will be March 29, 2019. The minimum cash wage required to be paid to tipped employees will increase to $3.59 on this same date.

Michigan Amends Paid Sick Leave Law and Establishes Effective Date

In September 2018, the Michigan legislature adopted as law a proposed ballot measure that would require employers to provide their employees paid leave to be used for “sick” and “safe” time purposes, and other reasons. The law has been amended. The law, now known as the Paid Medical Leave Act, requires covered employers to provide up to 40 hours of paid medical leave per year to eligible employees.

Michigan Scales Back Minimum Wage Increase and Paid Leave Requirement

Minimum Wage Update for Various Jurisdictions

12/01/18

Various jurisdictions have increased their minimum wage rates. If applicable, you must increase the pay rate for exempt and/or non-exempt employees to meet the new minimum wage. For New York, the pay rate increase is effective on or before December 31, 2018. For all other jurisdictions and federal contractors, the increase is effective on or before January 1, 2019. An updated poster is not required provided that the employer has the most recent poster already on display. If needed, employers should order a new minimum wage poster. The minimum wage rate is based on the employee’s work location.

Voters in Michigan, Missouri, and Utah Approve Marijuana Laws on Election Day

Three states approved new marijuana laws on Election Day 2018. Voters approved medical marijuana laws in Missouri and Utah, while Michigan voters approved a recreational marijuana law.
